Children arrive and do table activities. These acitivities may include lacing cards, math manipulatives, puzzles, books, or games.
We officially begin our day with WVBS Live (morning announcements) and our good morning rhyme We then gather in front of the chalkboard for the message. Message Time: At this time I write a message while the children watch. We then read the message together and work on numerous pre-reading skills such as looking for specific letters or words, counting the number of words in each sentence, talking about capital letters and punctuation. As the year progresses, students listen for beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words and have an opportunity to share the pen during the writing. At the end of the message the helper of the day is identified. The helper then uses a pointer while leading the class in singing the ABC song.

Relax and Review time: the children spread out around the room with their book tubs for silent reading time. Mrs. Davis and I around to each student to review the alphabet and popcorn words.
Helper: We do 2 rounds of name helper. For the 1st round, we begin by sounding out the helper's name which has been scrambled in the pocket chart. The helper then unscrambles their name and we count how many vowels and consonants and we talk about tall letters (upstairs), 1st floor letters and basement letters (those that hang below the line). The helper then passes out big letter cards and the children line up to spell the helper's name. The helper leads the class in the name cheer. Then we learn more about the helper by asking questions such as "what is your favorite food, favorite thing to do, favorite TV show, etc." The chldren then go to their tables where they glue cut up letters on the paper to spell the helper's name and draw a picture of the helper. There pictures are kept in a Friend's Folder which the children should keep in the backpacks so they can share with their family each day.
Guided Reading Stations: The children do 3 different stations. One station is guided reading with Mrs. Dixon, one station is writing with Mrs. Davis and the other station is an independent activity which varies from working on the computer, a listening activity or a cooperative game.
