Popcorn word practice

Have your child:

    * Find the word in a book or highlight it in the newspaper.

    * Trace the word in salt, sand, pudding or shaving cream.

    * Use magnetic letters on the refrigerator or cookie sheets to spell words.

    * Cut out letters from magazines to spell the words.

    * Use playdoh to roll out and make the letters in ther word or a tootpick to write the word on the playdoh.

    * Type the words on the computer.

.   * Use Alphabits cereal to spell the words.

   

Also:

.   * Make up clues to help your child remember the words.

    * Show or print 1 letter at a time until the child guesses the word.

    * Talk about the shapes of the letters in the word and take a marker and draw around the word. Take your finger and trace the letters of the word on the palm of your child's hand or back

Use the flashcards below for these activities:

.    * Make puzzles by cutting them apart between the letters.

     * Cut apart all of the cards and put them in a box or lay them on the floor.  Have your child draw a card and read it.  Put the known word in 1 pile and the unknown words in another.  Keep practicing the unknown words!

     * Have your child draw a card and write the word on a piece of paper or a wipe-off board.  Have them say the word when they are done.

     * Have your child draw a card, say the word and use it in a sentence.

     * Have your child read the words as fast as he/she can.  Use a timer to keep track of their speed.  Record their time and have them try to beat it next time!
